Coming Soon to a Democracy Near You.

Thousands of students have marched in the streets of the Chilean capital after talks between their representatives and government officials failed to meet students' demands.
Several people, including reporters, were injured in Thursday's march after police tried to disperse the protesters in Santiago's Plaza Italia using water cannons and tear gas.
Camila Vallejo, the spokeswoman for leaders of students at 25 state universities, called the violence unprecedented, even after five months of confrontations between students and police

Why do Mexicans Behead? No History of Beheadings in Mexico Prior to 2006

Decapitation is quickly fatal to humans and most animals as brain death occurs within minutes without circulating oxygenated blood. However, some animals and insects such as cockroaches can survive decapitation, and die not because of it, but because of starvation.

The British officer John Masters recorded in his autobiography that Pathan women in the North-West Frontier Province (1901–1955) of British India (now modern day Pakistan) during the Anglo-Afghan Wars would behead and castrate non Muslim soldiers who were captured, like British and Sikhs.

In Japan, decapaiation was historically performed as the second step in seppuku (ritual suicide by disembowelment). After the victim had sliced his own abdomen open, another warrior would strike his head off from behind with a katana to hasten death and to reduce the suffering. The blow was expected to be precise enough to leave intact a small strip of skin at the front of the neck—to spare invited and honored guests the indelicacy of witnessing a severed head rolling about, or towards them; such an event would have been considered inelegant and in bad taste.

The type of "beheading" practiced by Al Qaeda and similar groups differs from traditional judicial beheading. Traditional beheading is done quickly, with a massive steel blade, which cuts through the neck from the back, first severing the spinal column, then cutting the four large blood vessels, the trachea, and the esophagus. Unconsciousness is nearly instantaneous, and brain death occurs shortly thereafter. Terrorist-style beheading is reversed: using a rather small knife, first the killer cuts the throat, severing the carotid arteries and jugular veins, the trachea, and the esophagus, causing the victim to bleed out within a minute; then the spine is slowly severed by an instrument that is not really massive enough for the job (acceptable substitutes would include a machete, a butcher's cleaver, or a more traditional sword or axe). The first half of this procedure follows the method for Islamic ritual slaughter of food animals. The second half follows no clear precedent.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decapitation

Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna claims the inspiration for the terror tactic had been al-Qaeda in Iraq. "This began after there was an image that al-Qaeda sent out to the world via the Internet showing the execution of a prisoner in Iraq," he told a news conference after the 2007 video.

Decapitations were almost unheard of here before 2006. The first case related to the drug wars occurred in April of that year, when thugs left the craniums of two policemen in the seaside resort Acapulco

Decapitations have become as commonplace in the increasingly vicious narco turf battles as stabbings are in London. During August alone, gangsters hacked off 30 craniums across the country — adding to the total of almost 200 beheadings in 2008 so far. Heads have been stuck on crosses, shoved into iceboxes and left in car trunks along with snakes

Obama Administration Strongarms Air Force Four Star General to Change Testimomy in Favor of Large Democratic Campaign Donor

"The four-star Air Force general who oversees Air Force Space Command walked into a highly secured room on Capitol Hill a week ago to give a classified briefing to lawmakers and staff, and dropped a surprise. Pressed by members, Gen. William Shelton said the White House tried to pressure him to change his testimony to make it more favorable to a company tied to a large Democratic donor."
Is Obama a taller, better looking, darker skinned Richard Nixon?

More on Philip Falcone, the billionaire hedge fund manager and large democratic contributer named in the above link.

"New York, N.Y.—“It was permissible, but I wouldn’t advise another fund to do it!” Philip Falcone says of the $113 million loan he took from the fund he manages, Harbinger Capital Partners, to pay his 2008 taxes—a move that has made him the subject of an S.E.C. investigation. “I have always kept the bulk of my money, and I mean the bulk of my money, in the fund,” he tells Vanity Fair. “How can anyone possibly say my interests aren’t aligned with theirs?” Contributing editor Bethany McLean spoke to “Manhattan’s most controversial couple,” Philip and Lisa Maria Falcone, about the gossip and accusations that surround them.

Romania

Romanian President Traian Basescu says U.S. President Barack Obama has advised him to reform his country's troubled justice system.
Mr. Basescu spoke Wednesday in Bucharest, one day after he met with President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House. A White House statement issued afterwards says discussions covered ongoing political and economic reforms in Romania.
The eastern European country's police and courts have been pursued by allegations of corruption and political interference.
Obama scolds Romania on corruption. Then gives them missiles.

EXCLUSIVE | The Obama White House tried to rush federal reviewers for a decision on a nearly half-billion-dollar loan to the solar-panel manufacturer Solyndra so Vice President Biden could announce the approval at a September 2009 groundbreaking for the company’s factory, newly obtained e-mails show.
/
“We have ended up with a situation of having to do rushed approvals on a couple of occasions (and we are worried about Solyndra at the end of the week),” one official wrote. That Aug. 31, 2009, message, written by a senior OMB staffer and sent to Terrell P. McSweeny, Biden’s domestic policy adviser, concluded, “We would prefer to have sufficient time to do our due diligence reviews.”

Solyndra collapsed two weeks ago, leaving taxpayers liable for the $535 million loan.

"Crisis of the Cucumber." Muammar Winning NATO's Clusterfuck "Libyan War." Vlad Talks Smack

The presidents of Asaja in Lleida and Tarragona, Pere Albert Roque and Castelló, respectively, have expressed the desperation of an industry that draws black months and that "pays the faults of others," for example in the case of the crisis of the cucumber. Es por ello que Castelló ha asegurado que a partir de ahora responderán con el criterio del "ojo por ojo" y pagarán "con la misma moneda" a los atacantes, que ha calificado de "terroristas" . That is why Castelló has said that from now respond to the criteria of "an eye for an eye" and paid "in kind" to the attackers, who he described as "terrorists."
Trade Wars Betwen Spain and France commence

'Asaja coordinator in Catalonia, Albert Castelló, has said that already run out of patience, "eye for eye, tooth for tooth," and said it is absurd to continue with good words and wait for action by governments.
It has also warned that if they attack at the border now and the end of the month "automatically go looking French interests and cause the most damage possible." He called on the Catalan police to be "gatekeepers" and to defend the interests of Catalan and Spanish when these attacks occur, as has ensured that the security forces do Gauls.
Asaja has hit back against the Government for its "immobility" when taking concrete steps to defend the interests of local producers, which this week have been suffering more attacks on the border.'

ATF Sells Thousands of Assault Rifles to Mexican Drug Cartels

"Gun Runner and another operation called Fast and Furious were designed to dismantle the gun-smuggling routes that drug cartels use to ferry high-powered assault rifles from the U.S. into Mexico. By allowing people to illegally purchase large quantities of the weapons from gun dealers, officials hoped to trace the firearms to the drug cartel members and prosecute them. But ATF whistleblowers allege that officials lost track of the guns."

Loyalists of Yemen's Saleh wield knives and Daggers to Block UAE Embassy as Hundred's of Thousands anti-Saleh Protesters Gather in Square Seeking Saleh's Ouster

Update:
Yemen's president has laid down new conditions for signing a power transition deal, thwarting Gulf efforts to bring an end to a months-old political crisis in the country.
A Gulf mediator left Sanaa, the Yemeni capital, on Sunday, having failed to secure Ali Abdullah Saleh's signature on the deal, according to a report on the AFP news agency
/
European, US and Arab ambassadors, who were pressing Saleh to sign the accord, were trapped for hours on Sunday in an embassy surrounded by armed pro-government supporters.

Eventually, Yemeni army helicopters ferried the diplomats out to the palace
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/05/201152216373928689.html

Prospects that Saleh would sign the pact as promised were thrown into doubt.
Wielding knives, daggers and swords, hundreds of Saleh loyalists blocked the entrances to the United Arab Emirates Embassy, where at least five ambassadors were gathered in expectation the embattled leader would arrive to sign the deal.
"Everybody is worried. We can't leave the embassy," said a Saudi diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.
Pro-Saleh militiamen dressed in traditional Yemeni dress roamed the streets of the capital, especially outside embassies, and blocked the road to the presidential palace.

At one point, armed men attacked a convoy of the Gulf Cooperation Council's chief mediator, secretary-general Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani, to try to keep it from reaching the UAE Embassy, witnesses said. Pounding the car, they shouted against Gulf intervention in Yemeni affairs. The convoy of the Chinese ambassador also came under attack by armed men before a police detail was deployed to clear the way and disperse the crowd.

On Saturday, Saleh condemned the proposed deal as "a coup" and warned the U.S. and Europe that his departure would open the door for al-Qaida to seize control of the fragile nation on the edge of Arabia.

After Adding Trillions of Debt to Create a 'Recovery' the US is Currently Creating the Same Amount of Jobs as were Created in the Depths of the Recession

First, the increase in job growth that occurred over the past two years results from a decline in the number of layoffs, not from increased hiring. In February 2009, a month during which the labor market lost more than 700,000 jobs, employers hired four million workers. In March 2011, employers hired four million workers. The number of hires is the same today as it was when we were shedding jobs at record rates.
/
The decline in layoffs is not unexpected and does not necessarily reflect labor-market health. Layoffs tend to occur early in a recession. When an economy has reached bottom and has already shed much of its labor, layoffs slow. But that doesn't mean that the labor force is recovering. We could have high unemployment and a stagnant labor force even when layoffs are low. Isn't the fact that hires exceed separations indicative of a healthy labor market? Unfortunately, no
/
Bear in mind that the U.S. labor force has more than 150 million workers or job seekers. In a typical year, about one-third or more of the work force turns over, leaving their old jobs to take new ones. When the labor market creates 200,000 jobs, it is because five million are hired and 4.8 million are separated, not because there were 200,000 hires and no job losses. When we're talking about numbers as large as five million, the net of 200,000 is small and may reflect minor, month-to-month variations in the number of hires or separations

There is No Leadership From the World's So-Called Democracies. The Banks Govern

At 43%, Spain's youth unemployment is the highest in the EU by far, and more than double the average. For those aged 16 to 19 the rate is 64% – an 11% increase on the previous year. One in five of those under the age of 30 are still looking for their first job, and almost half (46%) are on short-term contracts of less than 6 months.
Youth unemployment here is higher than in Tunisia and Egypt. It's so high that many young people have to look long and hard to see past it.

"I would welcome it very much if our Greek friends found a privatization agency independent of the government and modeled after Germany's Treuhandanstalt," Juncker said, adding that such a body should be staffed by international experts.
"Henceforth, the European Union will escort Greece's privatization program as if we were conducting it ourselves," he said. Proceeds from the program should be considerably higher than the 50 billion euros Athens has proposed, he added.

Implement another austerity package with youth unemployment over 40% and over 60% in those aged 16 to 19? What will this accomplish other than paying the bankers or delaying an inevitability? What happens in Greece, Ireland and Portugal that have similar problems with unemployed youth yet embark on further austerity measures?

The EU wants to send,"International Experts," foreigners, into Greece to sell off and privatize the nations assets at the cost of the citizens and more notably the young people. Vultures yanking the internal organs from a dead or dying carcass that sits on the side of the road.

The uprisings in the Middle East were initially brought on by hunger and joblessness. How soon before Europe's periphery nations follow suit?

Like Osama, democracy is dead. It has been murdered by the leaders of the worlds democratic nations for the enrichment of their own wallets. The kicking-the-can-down-the-road in order to survive the next election cycle is short sighted ignorance on a massive and foolish scale. The financial crisis that gripped the world has not been settled, but delayed. The United States and the EU nations bailed out their banks, their campaign donors, with taxpayer dollars and euros and now the banks as vultures are eyeing the depleted and dying corpses of the citizens as they seek to extract every remaining drop of life and hope.

This will not end well. US hegemony is dead on the vine and a vacuum is filling the empty spaces left. Neo-nationalist movements are already gaining in popularity as they gain favor from the failed policies of the neoconservatises and the neoliberals. Upheavals and unrest on a scale not seen by this world in over fifty years will soon follow. Democracy is dead.

The combined force targeted the leader after intelligence reports indicated insurgent activity in the district. Several insurgents were killed as they attempted to engage the security force. Additionally, two suspected insurgents were detained for further questioning.

After initial assessment, it was discovered that one of the detained individuals was the targeted leader.

No women or children were harmed during this operation.

There are Many Reasons Why the US Government is Insolvent and a Ponzi Scheme

Social Security and Medicare is not one of them. But soon the middle class will be forced to work longer for their SS and pay more for less in Medicare.

It is no coincident that the spiraling of US government debt and the redistribution of the wealth occur simultaneously.

The tunneling of the wealth from the coffers of the taxpayers into the hands of the wealthy elite is no accident nor is it a conspiracy. It occurs in broad daylight for all to see. Four of the top ten highest paid CEO's are from the Media industry. Do you think they will ring alarm bells signifying the destruction of the US middle class? Of course not.

Corruption and incompetence, the rewarding of failures, is an institutionalized aspect of the US government. The failures of Bernanke, Geithner, Wall St. and others were epic in the destruction caused, but all these parties have since been rewarded with greater wealth, more than had before the crisis, or appointments and re-nominations to positions of greater power and authority.

I once read that you believe in things because you needed to; what you believe in has no value of it's own, no function. A dog scratches where it itches. Different dogs itch in different places. I'm sure this is true.

The latest iteration of this decades long process began soon after the 9/11 attacks as the country was at best misled, at worst lied into an invasion and occupation of Iraq. An exercise in flag waving, jingoism and patriotism. A manipulation of one's belief system. A war who's final price tag has been put at $3 trillion dollars. The financial crisis was another opportunity to instill fear in the citizens and to prey on their belief systems. Give us $700 billion or Martial law will be imposed and ATM's won't spit out pieces of green paper. The ruling by fear and manipulation of long held beliefs appears to be the only tool available to the US government. Without them, the country is ungovernable so expect much more of this in the future.

The newest example. Hot off the press:
"If investors around the world thought that the full faith and credit of the United States was not being backed up, if they thought that we might renege on our IOUs, it could unravel the entire financial system," Obama told a CBS News town-hall meeting.
"We could have a worse recession than we already had, a worse financial crisis than we already had."
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/15/us-obama-debt-idUSTRE74E1TN20110515

More spreading of fear from Obushma. Bernanke is currently purchasing 70% of Treasury debt. It is impossible for the current debt load of the US to be paid in full without inflation or a massive spike in hiring and wage growth that would create vast sums of revenue for the US Treasury. Don't hold your breath. Fear of not raising the debt ceiling is invalid, a red herring and an attempt to kick the can further down the road. If you reach your debt limit and your costs exceed your income more debt doesn't change that fact. It just delays the inevitable. The spineless and captured politicians have no desire to lead and make the difficult choices that are needed.

One small example is the belief in affordable housing for all. "HUD for America, one big neighborhood." I share in this belief but am also aware the due to corruption and incompetence the US government is incapable of accomplishing goals outside of anything that doesn't include bullets, bombs and banks. The US defense industry, Wall St. and the financial sector thrive as the bottom 80-90% are being ground into dust.

Mexico

GUADALUPE DISTRITO BRAVOS, Mexico (AP) - It was a bloody sunrise for the people of this dusty Mexican border town Tuesday.
Police found two male heads on top of a cement wall in the plaza of Guadalupe Distrito Bravos, a town on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez, right across El Paso, Texas. Two headless bodies, one of them stabbed in the back, were later found in two separate homes. Another man and a woman were then discovered in a nearby house with their throats slashed.
Chihuahua state police said they believed all the killings were related.
The first victim appeared to be Cruz Alfonso Salazar, 32. His wife reported to police that she had seen men shoot him dead early Tuesday, then cut his head off and stick a knife in his back.
After speaking to Salazar's wife, police found her husband's head sitting alongside another man's head on top of a wall in the plaza.

But Goldman, as the Levin report makes clear, remains an ascendant company precisely because it used its canny perception of an upcoming disaster (one which it helped create, incidentally) as an opportunity to enrich itself, not only at the expense of clients but ultimately, through the bailouts and the collateral damage of the wrecked economy, at the expense of society. The bank seemed to count on the unwillingness or inability of federal regulators to stop them — and when called to Washington last year to explain their behavior, Goldman executives brazenly misled Congress, apparently confident that their perjury would carry no serious consequences.

Libyan Death Squads Stalk Benghazi

Story reminds me of Iraq in 2003:
BENGHAZI, Libya — Three weeks ago, a traveler spotted a man’s body in the farmland on this city’s outskirts, shot twice in the head with his hands and feet bound. He had disappeared earlier that day, after visiting a market.

Ten days later, near the same spot, a shepherd stumbled upon the body of second man, killed with a single bullet to the forehead. Masked, armed men had taken him from his home the night before, without giving a reason, his wife said.
The men, Nasser al-Sirmany and Hussein Ghaith, had both worked as interrogators for Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s internal security services, known for their brutality against domestic dissidents. The killings, still unsolved, appeared to be rooted in revenge, the families said, and have raised the specter of a death squad stalking former Qaddafi officials in Benghazi, the opposition stronghold.
The killings have unsettled an already paranoid city, where rebel authorities have spent weeks trying to round up people suspected of being Qaddafi loyalists — members of a fifth column who they say are trying to overthrow the rebels. If the violence continues, it will pose a stern challenge to a movement trying to present a vision of a new country committed to the rule of law, while potentially undermining hopes for a peaceful transition if Colonel Qaddafi surrenders power.
The rebels say their security forces are not responsible for the killings. Prosecutors here say they are investigating the attacks, and they are exploring the possible involvement of Islamists who were imprisoned by the Qaddafi government and are now settling old scores. “It’s our responsibility to protect people,” said Jamal Benour, the justice coordinator for the opposition in Benghazi. “It’s important the killers are punished. The law is most important.”
But some here dismiss talk of Islamists, saying they believe the killings are being carried out by an armed group allied with the rebels, or possibly Qaddafi loyalists pretending to be.
Last week, about a dozen men wearing balaclavas and carrying guns arrived at the house of Youssef al-Tobouli in three pickup trucks. At the time, Mr. Tobouli, a former internal security prison guard who had defected to the rebel side, was at the store picking up car parts. His terrified relatives called friends, and in the gunfight that followed, the room Mr. Tobouli shared with his wife and three children was destroyed by fire.
The attackers were eventually routed, and though they did not identify themselves, they left behind a Mitsubishi pickup truck with “February 17th” — the day Colonel Qaddafi’s opponents mark as the beginning of their revolt — painted on the side, Mr. Tobouli’s cousin said.
“I am very sorry to say that,” said the cousin, Eissa al-Tobouli, referring to the markings on the truck. He added that his cousin was part of a group of former Qaddafi officials who registered their names with rebel officials in Benghazi, on orders from the new authorities to make their defections official. “He paid the price for being in internal security,” the cousin said.
There may have been other attacks. Dr. Omar Khalid, a forensic pathologist at Jalaa Hospital in Benghazi, said the hospital had received at least a dozen bodies of executed men, though it was not clear whether they had worked for the government. The authorities are also investigating the executions of Qaddafi soldiers, said Ali Wanis, the Benghazi district attorney.
One victim, whose throat was slashed, has been in the morgue at Jalaa Hospital since mid-April, unidentified. When his body was found in the Guwarsha area outside Benghazi — near where the bodies of Mr. Sirmany and Mr. Ghaith were found — his feet and hands were bound with rope, the morgue’s manager said.
The killings in Benghazi are taking place in a city that otherwise seems safer with each passing day. Police stations burned during the February revolt have reopened. Legions of young volunteers have recently taken to the streets, to sweep and pick up the trash.

Bini Laden Smaghi. A Financial Terrorist Warns of Doom and Catastrophe if the Bankers aren't Paid in Full

“We need to strengthen the norms and the rules for each country to be full members of the euro rather than making easy ways out which would not work in any case,” Bini Smaghi said today.
He put some of the blame for the restructuring discussion on large investors who have bought insurance against a sovereign default and “stand to benefit greatly from the default and lobby in favor of it.”
“They tend to encourage naive governments to believe that debt restructuring can be done in an ‘orderly way,’ distracting them from implementing the appropriate policy adjustment,” he said. “If the euro area were to go down the path of leaving it entirely up to the markets to decide which countries are solvent and which are not, it would put the euro at a disadvantage compared with all other major currencies.”

The NATO-backed coalition in Libya has said it will create a fund for rebels fighting the government of Muammar Gaddafi.
The Transitional National Council (TNC), based in Benghazi, has appealed for loans of up to $3bn, saying they need around half of that for food, medicine and other basic supplies.

Rebel recruits in the eastern port city of Derna are being trained by Sufyan Bin Qumu, a Libyan who was arrested following the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, and held at Guantánamo for six years. Abdel Hakim al-Hasidi, a senior Libyan rebel commander in Derna, was also held following the invasion of Afghanistan and handed over to Libyan custody two months later. Both men were said to have been released from prison in Libya in 2008 as part of a reconciliation process with Islamists in the country.

"Mr. Geithner expressed concern about the fragility of the financial system. His worry, according to these people, sprang from a desire to calm markets, a goal that could be complicated by a hard-charging attorney general."

"But several years after the financial crisis, which was caused in large part by reckless lending and excessive risk taking by major financial institutions, no senior executives have been charged or imprisoned, and a collective government effort has not emerged. This stands in stark contrast to the failure of many savings and loan institutions in the late 1980s. In the wake of that debacle, special government task forces referred 1,100 cases to prosecutors, resulting in more than 800 bank officials going to jail. Among the best-known: Charles H. Keating Jr., of Lincoln Savings and Loan in Arizona, and David Paul, of Centrust Bank in Florida.
Former prosecutors, lawyers, bankers and mortgage employees say that investigators and regulators ignored past lessons about how to crack financial fraud."

Man Found Crucified and Wearing Crown of Thorns in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea — The body of a man with his hands and feet nailed to a wooden cross and a crown of thorns on his head has been found in an abandoned stone quarry, South Korean police said Wednesday.
A man wearing only underwear, with a wound on the side of his torso and nylon strings tied around his neck, arms and stomach, was found crucified Sunday in Mungyong, about 115 miles (190 kilometers) southeast of Seoul, said Chung Ji-chun, chief of the violent crime section at Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency.
Two smaller crosses were erected on each side of the cross he was nailed to, Chung said.
Police also found nails, a hammer, an electric drill, pieces of wood and instructions on how to build crosses inside a tent near the scene, Chung said. An SUV belonging to the dead man was found nearby

Lying Thieving and Corrupt Politicians Will Soon Force the Middle Class to Work Longer for Their Social Security and Pay More for Less in Medicare

WASHINGTON -- The top five recipients of federal corporate tax breaks are also among the biggest spenders in the U.S. political system -- they shelled out a combined $7.86 million in campaign contributions during the 2010 elections (in political action committee and individual employee contributions), according to analysis from the New York City Public Advocate's office. Bill de Blasio, the public advocate, is now calling on these companies to verify that no taxpayer dollars will be used in future election spending, warning such a move could "carry financial risk to the [companies'] bottom line."
/
According to the analysis by de Blasio's office, ExxonMobil, Bank of America, General Electric (GE), Chevron and Boeing had combined profits of $77.16 billion in 2010 but paid $0 in federal income taxes in their latest filing. At the same time, they gave a combined $7.86 million in political contributions during the 2010 election cycle -- a 7 percent jump over their 2008 political spending.

Tillman, Lynch and bin Laden

After coming under fire, Tillman’s patrol got out of their vehicles and gave chase, moving toward the spot of the ambush. Beevers said the fighting was “sustained” and lasted 15-20 minutes.
Beevers said Tillman was killed by enemy fire, but he had no information about what type of weapons were involved in the assault, or whether he died instantly
SAN FRANCISCO – Within hours of Pat Tillman’s death, the Army went into information-lockdown mode, cutting off phone and Internet connections at a base in Afghanistan, posting guards on a wounded platoon mate, and ordering a sergeant to burn Tillman’s uniform.
/
Nearby on the same base, a staff sergeant was in his tent when a captain walked in and told him to burn Tillman’s bloody clothing.
/
Two other sergeants who examined Tillman’s vest noticed the bullet holes appeared to be from 5.56-caliber bullets — signature American ammunition. An awful realization dawned on the sergeants, whose names, like those of others who testified in the investigation, were deleted from the recently released testimony.

Jessica Lynch. You know the one. The sweet, American-pie 19-year-old soldier and kindergarten-teacher wanna-be whose army squad took a wrong turn in Iraq and was, apparently, ambushed.
And some of her comrades were killed and she was taken prisoner, full of stab wounds and bullet holes, and she was whisked off to a ragged Iraqi hospital and held for eight days by vicious Iraqi guards and ostensibly abused, and later supposedly "rescued" in the most daring and macho made-for-TV moment of the war by elite teams of hunky U.S. Army Rangers and U.S. Navy SEALs. Wow.
Except that it never really happened that way. Except that Lynch herself doesn't remember a single thing and all the nurses and doctors and eyewitnesses on the scene say the Iraqi fedayeen guards had fled the day before the "rescue," and there was no danger whatsoever, no resistance of any kind, the U.S. forces could just walk right in, and they knew it.
And the hospital doors were wide open, and the nurses and doctors had gone out of their way to provide decent care for our precious Jessica, considering the circumstances, and doctors even tried to return Lynch to U.S. forces themselves.
And despite U.S. claims, Lynch had no knife wounds or bullet holes at all, just a few broken bones, and the dramatic and violent "rescue" was really just inane and silly and entirely faked and yet America bought it, hook, line and Rumsfeld, because it was on TV.
And now, here we are. Jessica and disgraced N.Y. Times reporter Rick "Oh my God do I need a gig" Bragg just inked a $1 million book deal to tell her nonstory, titled "I'm a Soldier Too: The Jessica Lynch Story," not "Oh My God You Are Such a Sucker for Buying This Book I Mean Wow."
Because this is how we fabricate our history. This is how we spin our patriotism, how we bake our jingoistic cake, the Lynch tale the most apt and definitive myth of the war so far.

WASHINGTON – Deputy National Security Adviser for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, and Assistant to the US President John Brennan said that Osama bin Laden was involved in a firefight with US forces when he was killed on Sunday in Pakistan.
/
The order was given to take bin Laden alive if possible, but if encountering likely resistance, he could be killed on sight, according to Brennan. He said bin Laden was killed in the firefight, along with his son, two couriers at the house and his wife, the latter of whom appeared to have been used as a human shield.
http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=218906
White House officials can't get their story straight about what happened in the Pakistani compound where Osama Bin Laden was killed. Though officials have clarified that he was shot twice -- in the head and in the chest -- reports from Monday that Bin Laden was using a woman, probably his wife, as a human shield so he could fire back at U.S. troops are now being backpedaled on, horrifying and villainous as they are. "He was firing behind her," an anonymous official said Monday morning. Later on Monday, an official told Politico, "I'm not aware of him having a weapon." Another official gave conflicting information that, "A different guy's wife was killed, while Bin Laden's wife was "injured but not killed." A separate official said no woman was used as a human shield.

Bernanke's Bet

The danger of an inflationary wage-price spiral, goes this argument, is negligible because unemployment is high and pay is stagnant.
Maybe. But inflation’s dynamics might be changing. Here’s why. The recession caused enormous factory and business closures; now, there’s less capacity to meet rising demand. Companies have more power to raise prices; a depreciating dollar compounds the effect by making imports more expensive.

You can see this vividly in two industries: autos and airlines. Since 2006, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have shut about 25 percent of their capacity, says economist Sean McAlinden of the Center for Automotive Research. Car “incentives” (a.k.a. price discounts) are shrinking—which means prices are rising. The same thing has happened with airlines. In 2009, they made the biggest percentage cutbacks in capacity since 1942; the number of daily domestic departures (24,798) in late 2010 was nearly 10 percent lower than in 2007. In March, domestic airfares were 11.5 percent higher than a year earlier.

Bernanke is a Liar, a Money Printer and a Sociopath

Tax revenues can then be spent in the community redeveloping vacant properties, training people for new jobs, or on other economic development programs. That leads to more hiring and paychecks that can help poor homeowners avoid foreclosure, he said.
Bernanke noted lower-income households fell behind on their debt payments at a much higher rate than those with higher incomes. They were also more likely to lose jobs during the recession.
/
"Until vulnerable families and troubled communities have regained lost progress, the economic recovery will remain incomplete," Bernanke said.
I Care About Poor People. No, Really I Do.

“The Fed is still your friend if you are invested in cyclical stocks , commodities, and foreign currencies. If you eat food and run your car on gasoline, the Fed will continue to hurt you. If you are looking for a job, you may be wondering why it is still so hard to find ond despite all the money the Fed has spent so far on QE2.0. If you are retired and living on interest from your CDs, then you are getting really squeezed between rising food and fuel prices and the Fed’s zero interest rate policy. In other words, the Fed seems to be doing everything to widen the gap between the Haves and Have Nots than to lower unemployment and boost economic growth, which remains “moderate” according to yesterday’s FOMC statement.”

US and UK Turning Japanese. I really Think So

Ultimately, QE2 screwed savers by robbing them of income through the Fed’s treasury purchases, undermined banks’ earnings by in effect swapping a higher yielding treasury with bank reserves that today yield a mere .25%, and eviscerated the living standards of the middle class by helping to spike the speculative punch bowl in the commodities space. Not a bad trifecta for a Fed Chairman who claims to be doing everything in his power to prevent us from becoming the next Japan but who in fact is hastening our arrival at that very destination

Even so, things are beginning to look unnervingly similar to what happened in Japan. Economic developments seem set on much the same glide path. Two and a half years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, there is still painfully little growth to speak of in the UK economy.

The group said its overall index fell deeper into negative territory, sliding by three points to -31, well down on the -16 it stood at in April last year.
It added that it was only the third time the index had dropped below -30 in the survey's 37-year history, with the previous two occasions being in early 1990 and mid-2008.
Nick Moon, managing director of GfK NOP Social Research, said: "Coming after six months of stagnant economic growth, this is a significant drop – one that is bad news for the government and bad news for the economy.
"It suggests that the attempts to spur growth in last month's budget have failed to convince the public, and this may well be sorely felt on the already-beleaguered high street.
"It is particularly striking that all five areas of the index fell this month, pointing towards growing gloom as we head into summer.
"These figures must make the possibility of a double dip recession increasingly real."

Munger, buddy of billionaire Warren Buffett, made his remarks at a discussion at the University of Michigan. He was defending the bank bailouts that angered so many Americans. Munger said everyone should "thank God" for the bank bailouts.
"Now, if you talk about bailouts for everybody else, there comes a place where if you just start bailing out all the individuals instead of telling them to adapt, the culture dies," he continued.
Munger said the bailouts were required to save America. But he said bailing out everyday Americans would have been a mistake.
"There's danger in just shoveling out money to people who say, 'My life is a little harder than it used to be,'" Munger said. "At a certain place you've got to say to the people, 'Suck it in and cope, buddy. Suck it in and cope.'"

AFGHAN BOY (holding a gun and making gun noises): Ka-choo! Daga daga daga daga! Pum pum pum! (etc.)
VO: In 1982, Ronald Reagan dedicated the Space Shuttle Columbia to the resistance fighters in Afghanistan.
President RONALD REAGAN : Just as the Columbia, we think, represents man’s finest aspirations in the field of science and technology, so too does the struggle of the Afghan people represent man’s highest aspirations for freedom. I am dedicating, on behalf of the American people, the March 22nd launch of the Columbia to the people of Afghanistan.
VO: Since 1979, the mujaheddin resistance had been fighting a vicious war in Afghanistan against the Soviet invasion. But now, a small group in the Reagan White House saw in these fighters a way of achieving their vision of transforming the world. To them, they were not just nationalists; they were freedom fighters, who could bring down the Soviet Union and help spread democracy around the world. It was called the Reagan Doctrine.

RICHARD PERLE , Assistant Secretary of Defense 1981-1987: We’re closer to being revolutionaries than conservatives, in the sense that we want to change some deeply entrenched notions about the proper role of American power in the world. We want to see that power used constructively, and to enlarge the opportunity for decent governance around the world. We’re not happy about the old, cozy relationships with dictators.
VO: And the man who was going to help the neoconservatives do this was the new head of the CIA, William Casey. He was convinced that Afghanistan was one of the keys to this aggressive new policy. America was already sending limited amounts of aid to the mujaheddin. But now, Casey ordered one of his agents to go and form an alliance with the freedom fighters, and give them as much money as they wanted and the most sophisticated weapons to defeat the Soviet military forces.
MILTON BEARDEN , CIA Field Officer, Afghanistan, 1985-89: For Casey, Afghanistan seemed to be possibly one of the keys. So he tapped me one day to go. He says, “I want you to go out to Afghanistan, I want you to go next month, and I will give you whatever you need to win.” Yeah. He said, “I want you go to there and win.” As opposed to, “let’s go there and bleed these guys,” make a [unintelligible] Vietnam, “I want you to go there and win. Whatever you need, you can have.” He gave me the Stinger missiles and a billion dollars.

VO : American money and weapons now began to pour across the Pakistan border into Afghanistan. CIA agents trained the mujaheddin in the techniques of assassination and terror, including car bombing. And they gave them satellite images of Russian troops to help in their attacks

VO: At the very same time, another group began to arrive in Afghanistan to fight alongside the mujaheddin. They were Arabs from across the Middle East, who had been told by their religious leaders that their duty was to go and free Muslim lands from the Soviet invader.
